April 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment
There are literally thousands of affiliate programs on the internet that cover just about every product and service one could imagine. Hence, finding the right affiliate program can be quite a difficult task. If you’re new to affiliate program, you have to know that to the business owner, an affiliate program is virtually a free marketing tool that allows them to generate extra business without having to invest in any significant up-front costs. They typically have nothing to lose by recruiting as many affiliates as possible.
You have to define your target audience; whether it’s general traffic or specific types of visitors? Is you audience mainly comprise a particular age demographic? Male and/or female?
You have to decide which industries fit in best with your audience. Before you can start looking for affiliate programs, you need to decide what kind of products or stuff appeal most to that target audience. Then only you should see if there are good affiliate programs that sell that stuff or products.
Here’s a good formula, that we follow, to remember always:
” No buyers = no money ! ”
Look for programs that have the best reputation, commissions, marketing materials and try to tie it all into offers for the actual buyer. Use your common sense about the price of the products or services you’ll be marketing for these programs. They may pay 50% commissions, but do they charge twice what they should to the buyer? Of course you want good commissions, but you also want and need to market something people will actually want to buy or else you’ll not get any commission at all. This actually means you have to ensure fair prices from the sellers ! You might earn less per sale, but think about the volume of sales. The right balance makes you the most money.
There are a couple of videos on affiliate marketing which we have included in our Video Tutorial section that you should view to further enhance your understanding on this subject. View them and enjoy.

Choose your web host carefully !

This decision cannot be taken lightly !
There are a number of key things you need to consider when choosing your web host. While not every business will need all of the features that we list below, keep them in mind when reviewing different hosting packages:
- secure server capabilities; which allow private information like credit card numbers to be sent through your site without fear of interception.
- fast servers; a crucial feature because your online income is going to be directly proportional to the speed at which your web pages load.
- the space they provide; though most web sites in average use 10 megabyte, it is useful to have extra space available for future expansion.
- unrestricted CGI access; you have to have a full CGI-bin access as most professional web sites need to use CGI programs at some time or other. ( Refer to the Glossary for more info on CGI)
- SSH and FTP access; you need this to transfer files back and forth between your local computers and your web server. You may also want public FTP access, so ensure this is an option too. ( Refer to the Glossary for more info on SSH and FTP)
- web-based administration; a great feature for those not technically inclined as it allows you to manage your server via the Web.
- access to raw server logs; necessary to analyze your web site traffic.
- full e-mail service; including POP mailboxes and unlimited e-mail aliases. Even better if they offer IMAP.
- power and daily server backups; to ensure that you’ll never lose anything should the hardware crash or a natural disaster occur.
- no minimum contract; as should something ever happen, you might not be able to switch when you need to.
- what is their down time; your web site is your business, so choose a web host that you can depend on to keep your storefront visible to the world.
- their technical support; should be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by phone and e-mail. This is critical.
With all that said, you should also consider what should be avoided when choosing your web host. Avoid having your web site hosted by your Internet Service Provider. Given that one of the key concerns discussed earlier is speed and reliability, it makes more sense to use a company that specializes in hosting web sites.
You should also avoid using free service, as visitors will perceive your site as small time and unprofessional. If you do manage to establish a business using a free web site address, your name becomes linked with their name because you are using their root domain as your web site address. They can shut you down instantly. For example, if you get accused of spamming, they can cut you off without even giving you a chance to defend your self. They could even go out of business, leaving you with nothing! There are many more negative effects, but suffice what have been discussed for now.
The bottom line is that your web site is your business and your host is your partner; so choose your web host carefully.
So after all this you’re probably curious who we recommend for web hosting. There are several good ones you can use and we are using the ones provided by Dotster and GoDaddy.
